Where you found something is not background detail — it's evidence. Every species lives somewhere for a reason, and the place itself rules candidates in and out before you've examined a single feature. Reading habitat and range is how naturalists shrink a daunting list of possibilities down to a manageable few.

Range: is it even possible here?

Range is the geographic area where a species normally occurs. It's the bluntest, most powerful filter you have. If a candidate's range doesn't reach the part of the world you're standing in, it's almost certainly the wrong match, no matter how well the photo seems to fit. Strong resemblance to a species that lives a continent away usually means you've found a local relative that looks similar — not the famous one you half-recognized.

Habitat: the right place within the range

Within its range, a species lives in particular kinds of places — its habitat. Some are tied tightly to one setting; others are generalists found almost anywhere. Pay attention to where you actually are:

  • Wet or dry — a streambank, a marsh, and a dry hillside hold very different communities.
  • Sun or shade — deep woodland, woodland edge, and open meadow each favor their own species.
  • Soil and substrate — sandy, rocky, rich, or disturbed ground each selects for different plants, and the plants in turn shape which animals are present.
  • Elevation — moving up a mountain swaps one set of species for another, sometimes within a short climb.

A plant of deep shade found blazing in an open field, or a wetland specialist on a dry ridge, is a signal that something in the identification deserves a second look.

The two together are stronger than either alone

Range tells you what's possible in the region; habitat tells you what's likely at the exact spot. A species can be common across a wide range yet absent from the particular habitat you're in. Combine them: of the candidates whose range includes you, which prefer the kind of place you found it? That intersection is usually a short, trustworthy list.

Location alone is a clue, not a conclusion

For all its power, place can't confirm a species by itself. Ranges overlap, habitats are shared, and organisms wander, get carried, or get planted well outside where they "belong." Treat location as one strong line of evidence that you weigh alongside the visual features — never as a substitute for actually reading the subject.
